Mystery game tournament

We’re building out an online event of the “mystery game tournament ” variety where participants compete in a double-elimination bracket during which each stage of the bracket (from qualifiers to finales) is played in a different game, with no repeats. Throughout the event players will jump from game to game, having to adapt to different genres, input styles, and opponents.

In the bracket, all qualifiers will be played to the best of 3 matches and finals are will be played to the best of 5 matches – unless a different scoring system seems to be a better fit for the game being played (up to organizer’s discretion).

Setup

All games are played off of Filter’s PC, either in single on-site setup, or online via Parsec. Games are run via emulation when necessary, with controls pre-configured for a 6-button xInput device.

Game pool

We’re curating a large pool of games to run in these events, and thinks a good candidate fits some of these criteria:

  • relatively simple / quick to learn
  • playable on a 6 button controller with no analog sticks
  • has a versus mode with rounds no longer than 5 minutes
  • unique, unconventional, or underappreciated
  • funny
  • especially bad or stinky
  • refined controls
