The Hori Fighting Stick EX 2

Cute and compact, the EX2 matches the Xbox 360 aesthetic pretty well.

This Xbox 360 native stick is a compact and budget friendly option that has a couple drawbacks to consider. First the strengths:

  • Size is a good balance, fits the lap well without taking up too much space
  • Joystick feels good, despite not being from Sanwa / Seimitsu
  • Buttons feel pretty good and seem durable
  • 360 controller means it works on PC without much fuss
  • Has all 8 typical face buttons and the usual 3 meta buttons (start, back, menu)
  • Weighs just enough to not slide around like crazy thanks to the bottom metal plate

And then the drawbacks:

  • Compact size means modding potential is limited
  • Buttons are soldered directly onto a PCB, meaning replacing might require complex wiring or a new PCB
  • The button layout seems to be made with 3D fighters and shmups in mind. All traditional 2D fighters will require custom mapping
  • Could be a bit heavier
The Hori EX2’s internals present a challenge. Replacing the buttons would require custom wiring, and may require an entirely new PCB

Overall, it’s a good beginner stick if you can find a deal on it (think $40 or less). Considering the vintage, there are better options out there for under $100 that have more longevity. Modding this stick to upgrade or replace parts isn’t impossible but it’s not something I’d say a beginner should try.

If you want an idea of what modding this thing looks like, check out Outdated Reference’s guide. You’ll notice it involves a Dremel, soldering, a razor blade, and some… uh… moe faceplate art.
