Smash 64 Remix Online guide


Smash 64 Remix is a fan-made mod that keeps the base gameplay of Super Smash Bros 64 intact while adding new content like characters, stages, and single-player challenges. It also adds in some appreciated quality of life improvements.

Initial setup

  1. Download the Mupen64plus fun pack
  2. Extract it and move the mupen64plus folder wherever you store your games
  3. Open ~/mupen64plus/mupen64plus-gui.exe
    • If prompted to update, accept
  4. Click Settings > Controller Configuration
  5. Click the Manage Profiles tab
  6. Either click New Profile (Gamepad) or select a profile and click Edit Profile
  7. Click each button you need to map and press the button on your controler you want to set it to
    • A = Attack
    • B = Special attack
    • Z = Shield
    • L = Throw
    • R = Shield
    • Dpad (all) = taunt
    • Control Stick (all) = movement
    • C (all) = jump + color select
  8. Click Save and Close
  9. Click the Controller 1 tab to set your “Profile” and set your “Gamepad” device
  10. Start the game and test your controls out by clicking File > Open ROM, navigating to the ~/mupen64plus/roms folder and opening the “Smash Remix (v1.2.2).z64” file
    • If you need to exit fullscreen, press [Alt] + [Enter]
    • Let the game sit awhile if you want to watch the demo / how to guide

Playing online

All online functions are under the “Netplay” menu at the top-right.

Joining a game

  1. Click Netplay > Join Room
  2. At the top left, enter your gamertag
  3. At the top-right, pick the server closest to you
    • (US East recommended)
  4. At the top-right, click the Refresh button
  5. Select the room from the list below
  6. At the bottom-left, enter a Password (if required)
  7. Click Join Game

Hosting a game

  1. Click Netplay > Host room
  2. Enter details for the room (you’ll need to communicate these to other players somehow)
    • Room Name
    • Password (Optional)
    • ROM – navigate to the z64 file
    • Player Name – enter your gamertag
    • Server – select the one closest to you
  3. Click Create Game
  4. The room screen will display
    • The player 1 -4 slots will fill up as people join
    • You can chat below the player list
  5. Click Start Game when your players have joined (players can not join mid-match?)
