Retro games online with Null DC Bear

Null DC BEAR is a front-end application for Windows that combines several emulators together and provides lobbies and netplay. With it, you can see other players online, and challenge them to play games. The list of consoles/platforms this supports is huge:

  • NES
  • Super NES
  • PS1
  • Sega Master System
  • Sega Genesis
  • Sega Saturn
  • Dreamcast
  • Atomiswave (Arcade)
  • Naomi (Arcade)

Null DC BEAR Setup

Set up is easy, but does require getting a few pieces in place. The first major piece is Null DC BEAR itself.

Initial Setup

You may also want to turn the volume down to about 15%. Some of these old games are very loud
  1. Download the latest .exe from releases on github.
  2. Go to wherever you keep your games / emulators, create new folder named “Null DC BEAR”, and move NullDC.BEAR.exe to it
  3. Run NullDC.BEAR.exe and dismiss any security warnings Windows gives you.
  4. In the window that appears, enter a new player name and click the green button to add an exception to Windows Firewall.
  5. You can access this screen again later by going to Options > General
  6. Click the Save button
  7. From the top menu, click Controls
  8. Select the console you to set up from the tabs on the right
  9. If it’s not already selected, choose your device from the Controller menu on the left
  10. Click each button you want to set in the controls screen and press the corresponding button on your controller
    • Repeat until all buttons are set
  11. At the bottom left, click Save
You can check buttons on this screen as well. Buttons you press will be displayed in green.

Radmin VPN Setup

You will need a VPN client for the networking aspect of Null DC Bear. The recommended one is Radmin VPN, so go ahead and download and install it. The point of using a VPN is to allow computers to connect without exposing their actual IP addresses. To play with members of InputSelect.net, go ahead and connect with our server:

  1. Click Network > Join an Existing Network
  2. Click the Private Network tab
  3. Enter the following:
    • Network Name: InputSelect.net
    • Password: Selected
  4. Click Join
    • You should now see other computers connected to the VPN.

Downloading games from “Free DLC”

The Free DLC menu at the top may seem shrouded in mystery, but all it does is provide a very tidy and convenient way to fetch ROM files from Archive.org.

  1. Click Free DLC
  2. Search for a game name, or use the tabs to browse by system
  3. Select a game and then click Download
    • The download progress will be shown in a popup window. You can initiate more downloads at the same time. Playing online while downloading is NOT RECOMMENDED.

You can manually load games by placing the ROM files in the corresponding directory. For a quick link to each folder, click the “Open {System}’s Roms Folder” button from the Free DLC menu.
